American Social Media Personality Penalized After Large-Scale E-Bike Ride on Iconic Australian Bridge

New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an American social media personality and served two driving violation citations for reported reckless operation following a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.

The Event: A Prohibited Ride

A group of approximately 40 people operating e-bikes and motorcycles proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The assembly then turned around and rode through the city’s CBD and a nearby district.

"There was a risk of people to be injured and killed," stated NSW police assistant commissioner David Driver on Wednesday.

Law enforcement said they did not immediately pursue the group due to safety concerns but rather found the assembly at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.

Fines Imposed for Influencer

Later in the week, police stated they had issued the American online personality known as Sur Ronster, 26, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), carrying a penalty of $562 and penalty points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that the investigation is ongoing.

The influencer reportedly has more than 3.4 million subscribers on YouTube and over 1.2m on Instagram.

Influencer's Comments

The content creator spoke with a local publication this week following the event spread rapidly on digital platforms, stating he was sorry for giving "the biking community" a bad reputation.

"I accept the blame. It was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he said. "I am a visitor here, so I’m going to come here respecting the rules and standards of the city. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it was not meant to include a group ride, it was just to greet people near the bridge."

"I did not know the area well, I am to blame we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before we’re on the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to go back."

National Debate on Electric Bike Rules

The spate of e-bikes on streets across the country has prompted increasing demands for regulation. A senior government official, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."

"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the injuries that are presenting at our ERs are truly severe," he stated. "We’ve got to ensure we stop these things coming into the country [and] police are given the authority to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to dispose of them."

The state recorded 226 injuries related to electric bikes in the previous year. But, in the first seven months of 2025, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
