Apex Legends' Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update

The game developers has an exciting surprise prepared for Apex Legends gamers, perfectly timed for festive season. Fans of the battle royale's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to learn that an innovative traversal feature is being implemented when the Amped season launches on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Named "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of forward momentum when climbing over obstacles. As explained lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting has unofficially been a feature of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "mantle jumping." But it's challenging for casual gamers, and is mainly used by pro gamers in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, the team is making it easier for players of all skill levels to execute these advanced movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in Apex for a while, but executing it isn't easy to perform and gamers would never know it's possible without outside knowledge," Canavese explains. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can clearly identify the timing to activate the fast-paced traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and introducing fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

Why Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche technique accessible to everyone? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan explains the team wants gamers to feel powerful — even those who are new.

"Our community performs other crazy stuff like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players execute, and we wondered, 'How can we provide these capabilities to more players?'" the designer clarifies. "Because right now, some of these techniques are kind of janky to access — it requires to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. We proposed, 'How about we make a more official version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is largely the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant all getting enhancements to help keep them in motion. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will propel users upward faster than before. Her defensive walls now include overhead protection and capability to grant speed boosts to those nearby. However the spotlight is on aerial this Legend who's getting significant improvements this season, with various adjustments implemented to enhance her as stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that Valkyrie's time has arrived," states Legend designer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt that she's been top-tier previously, but due to the addition of new Legends, movement[-based] passives, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she's not very relevant in current the game. It was an ideal chance for us to revisit multiple elements in her abilities and essentially restore her to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer notes Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced some powerful changes. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, boosting her speed while airborne, and the jets themselves regenerates three times faster, enabling the player to spend more time aloft. She can no longer be harmed from her ultimate ability, which was enhanced to mark opponents who take damage from it. Her Skyward Dive ability — which lifts her entire squad skyward for redeployment or retreat — now takes reduced delay to fire up. She's also getting recently added Legend Upgrades that users can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or further speed up her Skyward Dive activation.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," Holstead comments.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's lone airborne map, Olympus, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with an extensive redesign that expands bottlenecks and renders claiming the high ground more manageable. The developers says the game Season 27 focuses on giving players the tools they need to compete in the competition.

"Essentially, we examined the game's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer Josh Mohan.

Apex Legends Season 27: Amped launches Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST.
