🔗 Share this article The Tragic Change Just One Year Has Caused in the United States In late October 2024, the landscape was completely different. Before the national election, reflective residents could recognize America's deep flaws – its unfairness and disparity – however they still could identify it as America. A free society. A land where constitutional order carried weight. A nation led by a dignified and decent public servant, despite his advanced age and growing weakness. Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens scarcely know the land we live in. Individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants are detained and shoved into vehicles, at times blocked from fair treatment. The left side of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed for an obscene event space. The president is harassing his political rivals or perceived antagonists and requesting federal prosecutors surrender a huge total of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are deployed across metropolitan centers under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, renamed the Defense Ministry, has effectively freed itself of routine media oversight while it uses potentially totaling nearly $1tn of taxpayer money. Universities, legal practices, news companies are submitting from leader's menaces, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family. “The US, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the limit into authoritarianism and extremism,” a noted author, stated this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I believed likely, it transpired here.” Every morning starts amid recent atrocities. It is difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we have become, and the rapid pace with which it occurred. Yet, we know that the leader was duly elected. Following his highly troubling initial presidency and despite the cautions associated with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – following the leader directly said publicly he would be a dictator just on day one – sufficient voters chose him rather than his Democratic opponent. While alarming as the present situation is, it's more daunting to realize that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. Where will another 36 months of this downfall leave us? And what if that period transforms into a more extended duration, since there is no one to stop this leader from deciding that additional tenure is essential, maybe for defense purposes? Granted, all is not lost. There are midterm elections the coming year that could establish an alternate governmental control, in case Democrats retake either chamber of parliament. We have elected officials who are striving to exert a degree of oversight, such as representatives that are launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from the justice department. And a leadership election in the next cycle could begin our journey to recovery exactly as last year’s election set us on this unfortunate course. There exist countless citizens marching in urban areas of their cities, similar to recent recently during anti-authority protests. Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is rising”, just as it did following the Red Scare in the 1950s or during the sixties activism or in the Watergate scandal. During those times, the listing ship finally returned to balance. The author states he understands the indicators of that awakening and observes it occurring currently. As support, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, cross-party resistance to a television host's removal and the largely united refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they report only authorized information. “The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep till specific greed turns extremely harmful, some action so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so disruptive, that it is compelled except to rise.” It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may turn out correct. In the meantime, the crucial issues remain: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its status internationally and its adherence to constitutional order? Or must we acknowledge that the national endeavor succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended? My negative thoughts tells me that the second option is accurate; that everything might be lost. My positive feelings, however, tells me that we need to strive, in whatever ways possible. For me, as an observer of the press, that means encouraging reporters to live up, more thoroughly, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it may be engaging with political races, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to defend ballot privileges. Not even one year prior, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The reality is, we are uncertain. Our sole course is to attempt to continue fighting. What Offers Me Encouragement Today The interaction I have in the classroom with young journalists, who are equally idealistic and grounded, {always
